The course takes roughly 45 minutes, and you may start and stop the course as many times as you like. You could do it all at once, do 3 minutes a day for 15 days, or whatever. When you complete the course, the final screen is your certificate of completion, print this out and exchange it for keys.
The web site sorts you into categories of paid/volunteer and position and from that combo determines whether you need a background check. I am not sure what the background check status is for Volunteer/Key holder, but if this is a concern, please let me know, and I can write to the diocese to enquire.
